Provisional College for Arts and Crafts (Zagreb, 1914-1918)
Biography: She was the favourite student of Professor Crncic,
and painted his powerful portrait which was reproduced in
1930 (in the review "Svijet", No 17). After completing
her artistic education, Mary Stiborsky very actively engaged
in the activities of the Women Artists' Club and exhibited
with them from their first exhibition in 1928 until 1935.
After that, she never again appeared in public. This was
due not only to the negative review which appeared about
her work in the "Jutarnji list" newspaper in 1935
(the art critic was Ivo Šrepl, 30 October 1935) – because
tastes vary, and the same pictures which were described
as "drawing-room anaemic flowers", were described
by the art critic in the "Novosti" newspaper as
a "very pleasant thing". Her health was soon seriously
impaired, and her mother buried her at the age of fifty-two.
Since she had no children, after the death of her mother,
the work of Mary Stiborsky-Peyer was completely dispersed.
What is available shows that she deserves more attention
than she has been given (Grga Gamulin did not even mention
her in his book "Croatian 20th Century Painting").
