Murtiæ - biography
Edo Murtiæ the Croatian painter, was born at Velika Pisanica
(Northern Croatia), on May 4, 1921. In 1925, his family
moved to Zagreb, where he attended primary and secondary
school. He also went to the School of Arts and Crafts. His
first one-man exhibition was held in 1925 in Zagreb. From
1941 he was part of the Yugoslav Resistance Movement, being
an active member from 1943. He painted while on active service
in the movement. He has travelled abroad a great deal, particularly
in France, Italy and the USA. His style has undergone a
rich spiritual maturation, gradually and without a break,
from his figurative paintings of the 1940s and 1950s to
his current Lyrical Abstract Expressionism. Edo Murtiæ has
had over one hundred and fifty independent exibitions and
taken part in about three hundred collective exhibitions
in all the continents. His works are featured in the leading
private and public collections round the world. He has designed
and made numbers of theatrical sets, murals and mosaics.
He lives and works in Zagreb and Vrsar.
