| Solin,
a town near the estuary of the Jadro river,
5 km northeast of Split; population 12,575.
It consists of three separate parts: 1)
the central part (Mitnica) at the intersection
of
|
| the
roads to Split, Trogir and Klis (the residential
and business part of Solin), 2) Majdan,
situated in a small valley of the upper
basin of the Jadro, with the cement factory,
and 3) Donja Strana (Sveti Kajo), a part
1.5 km to the west of the central part,
situated on the road to Trogir, with the
cement factory and industrial plants.
The ruins of the ancient Salona
are located between Donja Strana and the
central part of Solin. Solin lies at the
main road Split - Sinj.
Salona represents one of the most significant
ancient and early Christian sites in the
world. It is famous because the ruins
from both periods have been preserved
in situ - as it is rare elsewhere in the
world - providing research material of
all kinds. The data collected and published
have been presented to the international
cultural public. Guided sightseeing is
highly recommended due to the complexity
of the site. Solin has recently been landscaped
and urbanistically replanned so that the
whole town gives an impression of a park,
and the promenade along the Jadro river,
in the natural and historical environment
of extraordinary value, attracts many
walkers and excursionists. The Nativity
of the Virgin Mary (8th of September),
celebrated as the Day of the Town of Solin,
is commemorated with special care; it
is an occasion when many believers gather
here because Solin is also a religious
centre of the Split-Dalmatia County.
